Lockets have a long and storied history dating all the way back to the 16th century in Europe.  Lockets were used to conceal good luck charms, potpourri, and the strands of hair of a loved one.   People would carry their loved ones close to their hearts back then in the form of tiny painted portraits inside of their lockets.  Lockets soared in popularity in the Victorian era when they were used primarily to hold a portrait of a departed loved one.
